Steven's Guest Bathroom

Intro

Steven's guest bathroom had already undergone some renovations in 2004. With the help of Dave, Steven had removed the existing Avacado Green/Pink 70's theme and replaced the toilet and tile with a more modern look. Here is an 'after' shot:

But here is the problem. The bathtub was still avacado green, and the bathtub surround tile was still pink and white...

...with lovely gold detail work:

Destruction!

Step one was getting rid of the existing tile. This is accomplished with a hammer and aggression.

Using shovels, we removed the tile from the bathtub and were left with just the studs. We got the thumbs up sign from Dave, so it was time to remove the tub.

Removing a bathtub typically requires patience, crowbars, strategy, and care. Or, you can simply have Daniel grab the tub and rip the whole thing up in one swift motion. That's what happened, and I'm just sorry I didn't video it - it was an impressive feat. Do not be fooled by the fact that Dave is showing off his muscles - it was all Daniel.

Daniel takes a well deserved rest. Bathtub in the front yard? That's Mississippi baby!

Construction!

Next we assembled the Dave approved plumbing on the new bathtub.

The new bathtub did not fit exactly, which was to be expected. We built up the back wall using 1/4 inch plywood and the right wall with 1/2 inch plywood.

With the walls built up to the right dimensions, we installed the Dave approved back and right side of the tub surround.

The left wall had to have holes cut in it to accomodate the plumbing fixtures. We figured the safest way to make sure we cut in the right spot was to use a template. So we put posterboard up and poked holes in it, then transfered those holes to the wall. We double-checked those measurements using good old-fashioned measuring tape. The two measurements were not identical, probably due to the fact that the posterboard was flimsy. So, we just took an average of the two measurements. Dave approved of this plan.

After a few minor re-cuts, we got all the holes lined up and installed the left wall.

The only thing left to do was put on the faucets, showerhead, and spout. We discovered a problem. It seems that the new wall sticks out about 1/2 inch furthur than the original wall. This means that the spout cannot screw onto the pipe. We must have someone build a pipe that is 1/2 inch longer. Size does matter. Dave did not approve.

Stay tuned for part 2, which will include putting the spout on and finishing the walls.
